Description

The Gonds, are the largest Adivasi Community in India and are Dravidian's whose origin can be traced to the pre-Aryan era. They are mainly found in Madhya Pradesh and its surrounding States.

The word Gond comes from Kond, which means “green mountains” in the Dravidian idiom.

The inherent belief that a good image brings good luck, led the Gonds to decorate their houses and floors with traditional tattoos and motifs.
Gond art is characterized by paintings of numerous Gods and Goddesses, strange and exotic birds, flying snakes, tigers, dogs and cattle, breathtakingly beautiful trees and several other entities who inhabited the age old songs of the Pardhans.

The tribal art is characterized by the double line outlines, squiggles and dots.

Today, Gond art has found it’s way on paper and canvas as the new media of storytelling. Products such as Gond painting on wood, painted wooden trays and boxes have become extremely popular globally

This piece of art is on a box canvas and might have slight irregularities which adds to its unique charm.
